A Historic Persian Masterpiece Returns to Atiyeh Bros. for Our 125th Anniversary

A Rug with a Remarkable Oregon Story

A woven masterpiece crafted from fine wool has journeyed from museum walls back to our Tigard showroom. Making it just in time for the Atiyeh Bros. 125th Anniversary Fall Rug Sale. This exceptional Persian Tabriz rug entered Oregon history in the early 1900’s. It was a showroom piece at our downtown Portland location.

In 1905, the rug was featured as a prize-winning exhibit at the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland, where it captured the attention of prominent Portland residents Ralph and Edith Hoyt.

The Hoyt Family Legacy

Soon after the exposition, Ralph and Edith Hoyt purchased the rug, making it the centerpiece of their grand entryway. Measuring an impressive 9’7” x 15’3”, the rug remained a treasured family heirloom until the Hoyts’ daughter, Kathryn, sold it back to Atiyeh Bros.

From Showroom to Museum and Back Again

In 2000, as part of our 100-year celebration, Atiyeh Bros. proudly donated the rug to the Oregon Historical Society. There, it was carefully preserved and displayed from fall 2000 through spring 2001. For the past 25 years, this exquisite piece has remained under the Society’s expert care, ensuring its remarkable condition endures.

A Rare Haji Jalili Tabriz

Woven in the famed Persian workshop of Haji Jalili, this Tabriz rug exemplifies some of the finest craftsmanship of its era. Featuring a linen warp—rather than the more common cotton—and exceptionally fine knotting, the rug boasts a rich, velvety texture.
